Your Timeline on Google Maps
This was mentioned last time by Allan and, although I mentioned it in the Blog last month, we did not discuss it at the session. Timeline is a feature of Google Maps. First, I spent a little time demonstrating Google Maps, showing the Map View, Satellite View and Street View. You can search for places on Google Maps by town, postcode or just by category (e.g. "restaurant"). You can access Google Maps by going to www.google.co.uk/maps. To access Your Timeline, click on the 3-bar Menu symbol (top left) and select Your timeline from the menu.

You will see the map showing places you have visited – zoom in and click on a red dot for more details. Alternatively, you can select a date from the Timeline box at the top left to see where you were on a particular date. You can also click the boxes at the bottom of the screen to see places you have visited and to Manage Location History. The latter allows you to turn off the Location History feature if you do not want Google to track you.

For more detail on this, see:-

As Brian pointed out, Timeline could be helpful to identify where photographs where taken by comparing the date of the photo with Timeline.

Tablet Mode
Margaret had an issue because her PC was set to Tablet Mode. Windows 10 can operate in Tablet Mode or Desktop Mode. For a standard laptop (or desktop) PC, Desktop Mode is the most appropriate. If you have a Windows 10 tablet (with no physical keyboard), this will need to use Tablet Mode. Tablet Mode will run all apps in full-screen mode only and will pop-up the on-screen keyboard as required for typing. If you have a convertible/hybrid device where the screen can be detached and used separately from the physical keyboard, this will need to switch between the Tablet and Desktop Modes.

This behaviour can be controlled by going to Start, Settings, System, Tablet Mode.

Printer Drivers
Arthur asked a question about printer drivers. The printer driver is a piece of software which is produced by the printer manufacturer (e.g. HP). They have to produce a specific driver to match each printer to a specific operating system (e.g. Windows 7, Windows 10, Mac OS. etc). It is best to go to the printer manufacturer's web site and download the software for your printer/OS. Some printer manufacturers pass a copy of their driver software to Microsoft who make it available via the Microsoft Update process. Microsoft have some "generic" drivers which may allow basic operation of the device, but will not have the full functionality of the printer manufacturer's software.

Blog – PDF Archive
At the top of this blog, there is a box with a drop-down list of all the previous Computer Club dates, so you can access the blog for that session. There is a search box in the column on the right of this blog which you can use to search through all the previous blog posts for a particular word.

In addition, I have created an archive of these blog posts in PDF format. This archive is stored on my Dropbox and can be found at:-
I have also added a link to this archive in the right-hand column of the Blog.

Windows 10 - New Version
Windows 10 version 1809 will be released in October. I will have updated Windows 10 and Edge notes available soon after it is released. More on this at the October session.

Inbox by Gmail
If you have a Gmail address, you are probably familiar with going to gmail.com to access your mail. Google are working on a new web app called Inbox which you can find by going to inbox.google.com and signing in with your Google credentials. It is also available as a mobile app for iOS and Android. Inbox was released in 2015 and has a more modern look and feel than the traditional Gmail web app. It has a number of new features including:-

  • Snoozing emails until a later date
  • Automatically reminding you to reply to emails
  • Suggesting emails you might need to follow up
  • Bundling similar emails, e.g. Finance
Some of the new features of Inbox are being added to the new-look version of Gmail.com
You can find out more about Inbox here:-

Anyway, you might like to give Inbox a try…
